Attractions in Portugal

Attractions in Portugal

In Portugal, centuries old alleys can be just a stone’s throw away from the Atlantic Ocean. Each city has its own special charm, so why not start with the Portuguese capital Lisbon? Discover the hidden streets of the old neighborhood of Alfama, take a ride on historic tram 28, and enjoy the views from one of the miradouros. The Belém area, with the Torre of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery and the stunning MAAT, is another absolute must-see. Both of these are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The main destinations are Porto, where you can taste the famous Port wine, and Sintra, a fairytale town with castles covered in mist, where you can visit Pena Palace and the Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira among other things. In the south of the country, there is the Algarve region, known for its long sandy beaches and cliffs of Ponta da Piedade and its sea caves that can be visited by boat.

South in the Algarve there are countless sandy beaches, towering cliffs such as the Ponta da Piedade and grottos which can best be seen from the water.

Portuguese Cuisine

Portuguese Cuisine

Bacalhau (dried and salted cod) is one of the most common ingredients in Portuguese cuisine and is the base for the country’s national dish. According to locals, there are over 365 ways to prepare it and most of them are delicious. For example, it can be baked with potatoes or served in a traditional recipe called bacalhau à Brás.

Grilled sardines, an octopus salad, seafood rice or even a cataplana are the dishes that will fill your stomach with energy while strolling along the coast. If you are in Porto, then try a francesinha – a huge sandwich with several types of meat, covered with melted cheese and dipped in a beer and tomato sauce.

You cannot leave Portugal without trying a pastel de nata or two (they are best served warm and sprinkled with a pinch of cinnamon on top). And also, while you are in Vila Nova de Gaia, do a port wine tasting in one of the historic cellars from Porto.

Wonderful People

Wonderful People

While most of the tourists that visit Portugal go there for the landscapes, it is the people that stay with most of them after they have left. The Portuguese are known for being very warm, very patient and very curious. They are always ready to give you directions to a better spot, to a quieter beach or even to recommend you the best tasca (small local restaurant) where they and their families eat.

A conversation in a coffee shop in Lisbon can turn into a series of instructions, restaurant recommendations and even a short history lesson of the place. In small towns, local people can even open their eyes to you and share stories about the region where they live and tell you about all the good places to eat and drink in the area over a glass of wine.

Openness to strangers is what makes Portugal feel less like a place to visit and more like a place you could live.
