A Night Istanbul Will Not Forget
It was a sold out show at an intimate venue in the heart of Istanbul, one of the oldest cities in the world. The Ukrainian singer-songwriter Max Korzh returned to the city he fell in love with after years of silence, and brought with him the same blend of melancholy and warmth that fans all over the world adore. The crowd consisted of thousands of people, mostly young adults, who had traveled from Kyiv, Warsaw and other cities in Europe to finally experience the man and his music that they have been waiting for for so long. Many of them brought handwritten signs, some already crying in the crowd before the first song had even begun. The air was electric yet tender at the same time. It was the kind of energy that only emerges when an artist connects with his or her audience on a deeply personal level. The warm amber lighting cast long shadows on the faces of the thousands of people singing along to every word in perfect unison. Istanbul, the crossroads of cultures and longing, proved to be the perfect setting for the poetic world that Korzh created through his music – a world that is made up of love, loss, and the simple beauty of life. And as the air inside the venue trembled with the sound of his guitar and the emotions of his fans, it also trembled with something harder to define – a sense of belonging that was shared by everyone in the room and that transcended borders and languages.
Cozy Like a Conversation Between Old Friends
For starters, this was no typical big concert. To make the evening truly special and intimate, Korzh and her team chose a small, yet fitting venue to host the event. Every single person was close to the stage, close to the other people in attendance, and, indeed, close to themselves. Between songs, Max shared stories of his time on the road, like recollecting the beautiful sunsets in Istanbul by the Bosphorus, or what it was like to play for people carrying his songs through the storms of their lives in a foreign country. The crowd was glued to attention; they listened, mesmerized, as they responded to each tale with a collective exhalation of breath, smiles of recognition, and a feeling of camaraderie in the room, all united by their shared love of the music. And as the final notes faded away and the house lights slowly came up, there was no mad dash for the exit; instead, the crowd slowly got to their feet; some people swaying gently from side to side, while others hugged complete strangers standing next to them in a heartfelt attempt to prolong the magic of the night as long as possible, not wanting to return to the drabness of the outside world.
