Buenos Aires: The City That Never Sleeps

Buenos Aires: The City That Never Sleeps

Buenos Aires grabs you immediately and then never lets go. It is a city of European architecture and Latin passion. All of that is blended together in a unique and infectious way. Stroll through the tree-lined streets of Palermo, experience the tango in San Telmo, or view the colorful houses of La Boca from Caminito alley.

The food in BA is extraordinary. You must start with an asado (BBQ) where they serve slow-grilled beef to die for. It is a ritual for the locals and are usually held at someone’s house. Empanadas are found in every corner bakery and the sweetest ingredient used is put in everything, ‘dulce de leche’. For a sit-down dinner the parrillas are top-notch and range from a local neighborhood restaurant to the best steakhouses in the world.

Some things you won’t know about Buenos Aires until you arrive: Until around 10pm all restaurants are empty and then suddenly packed with locals (dinner usually starts latest around 9pm). Locals are very talkative so don’t hesitate to start a conversation as well. Last but not least: The city also has an incredible literary influence. Buenos Aires has most bookshops per capita than any other city in the world.

Getting around in Buenos Aires is relatively easy with a good metro system (called the Subte) as well as an extensive network of buses across the city. We recommend getting an eSIM before you fly to ensure you have reliable data to help you get around as soon as you land.

Mar del Plata: Argentina's Favourite Seaside Escape

Mar del Plata: Argentina's Favourite Seaside Escape

Approximately 400 kilometers south of Buenos Aires there is Mar del Plata, one of the main tourist centers in Argentina, where millions of tourists “breathe” every summer, in the city’s stunning beaches, the fresh fish and a really laid-back atmosphere.

The main and more iconic beach is Playa Bristol, it is the city’s main beach and is located in front of the grand Hotel Provincial. Thousands of beach tents are set up on the sand every year, lined up in rows in the same bright colors and same style as they were back in the 50s. A quieter option is Playa Varese, and for nature lovers there are also the rugged beaches on the southern coast of the city near the Cabo Corrientes lighthouse.

Mar del Plata has a vast array of seafood options, including local favorites of centolla (king crab), merluza (hake) and medialunas de manteca. A buttery and sweet croissant, medialunas de manteca are typically enjoyed for breakfast or brunch and with a strong coffee.

Fun Fact: Although you might not expect it, Mar del Plata is a real craft beer haven. Each year there is a big craft beer festival in the city, and in 2019 the city’s film festival, held since 1954, was recognized as one of the oldest in Latin America.

Mendoza: Wine, Mountains and Open Skies

Mendoza: Wine, Mountains and Open Skies

The ‘heart’ of Argentina is Buenos Aires but the ‘soul’ of Argentina is Mendoza – and it’s here, at the foot of the Andes in the west of Argentina, that you can find one of the world’s greatest wine regions, all set to be explored and savoured over some relaxed days.

Mendoza is home to the Malbec grape, and in terms of the quality of the terroir in the Uco Valley and the Lujan de Cuyo, it is arguably the best region in the world for this type of grape. The Bodegas are very welcoming to visitors, offering tastings and vineyard tours as well as long lazy lunches that extend into the afternoon.

But there is so much more to see and do in Mendoza. For the more adventurous, Mendoza is a paradise for those who enjoy the outdoors. Hikers and climbers can tackle the highest peak outside of Asia (Aconcagua, 6962m). Rafting down the Mendoza River is another must do for thrill seekers. In the winter, skiers and snowboarders can head to Las Lenas, a renowned ski resort in the region, that attracts visitors from all over South America.

Mendoza, as the rest of Argentina celebrates Vendimia (the harvest festival) in March with huge parades, concerts, fireworks and chooses a harvest queen, the city itself is a beautiful grid of wide streets and squares. A big earthquake hit the one that destroyed the city in 1861, left Mendoza without shade for many years, until the trees were replanted.

With so much to do and so much to explore in Argentina it is really handy to have an eSIM. Book a last minute wine tour, check where you are on the map when traveling between vineyards, check train/bus times. No need for local SIM cards or worry about roaming charges.
